Autism Poems: Difference vs. Deficit Models

“I changed my mind—

I don’t want to be autistic”

I think this facedown

On the bathroom floor

As reality ebbs

Away

From me

Because

Yesterday

I booked tickets

To an arena show

For a band I love,

Which is not a thing

I’ve ever done,

Could ever

Imagine

I would do,

And now

I do not

Know myself

Because

There is

Too much new

And reality ebbs

Away

From me

Like it doesn’t want to

Accidentally

Brush up

Against

The miserable

Thing
